Background and aspirations for ASAHP

BACKGROUND
It's both a pleasure and an honor for me to put myself forward as a candidate for the Board of ASAHP. I currently hold the position of Founding Dean at the School of Health & Human Sciences at Indiana University; Indianapolis, and I also serve as Director of the NIH-funded Post Baccalaureate Research Program in the Biomedical Sciences (IPREP). My dedication to advancing health professions education, research, and fostering interprofessional collaboration perfectly aligns with ASAHP’s mission and vision.

Over the past decade, I've been actively involved in administration, serving in various roles such as department chair, associate dean, and Dean. Additionally, I've been passionate about promoting underrepresented minorities in the biomedical field. My efforts extend beyond the confines of our school, as evidenced by my contributions to the NIH Bridges to Baccalaureate and Post-Baccalaureate Research Enhancement Programs funded grants. These NIH-funded initiatives underscore my commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for students.

One of the most fulfilling experiences of my career was attending the ASAHP leadership development program. This program equipped me with essential leadership skills and facilitated networking among academic peers. My goals for serving on the ASAHP Board are diverse. As Chair of the Leadership Development Committee, the committee aims to empower junior faculty leaders with the necessary knowledge and skills for successful administrative roles in health professions. I believe it's a crucial resource for nurturing future leaders. We hope to increase participation in this program, ensuring that emerging leaders receive guidance and support from seasoned professionals.

In summary, my background and aspirations exemplify my dedication to advancing health professions education. My leadership within ASAHP contributes to its strategic priorities, including diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as the cultivation of competent and confident leaders. My vision seamlessly aligns with ASAHP’s mission, and I hope to be a valuable addition to the board.
