Washington, DC – The Interprofessional Task Force (IPTF) of the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) and the University of Cincinnati (UC) are pleased to announce the three recipients of its Interprofessional Innovation Grant Program. The IPTF and UC developed the Interprofessional Innovation Grant (IIG) Program to provide support for interprofessional collaboration research among the ASAHP membership. The intent is to provide recipients a competitive edge in securing additional funding by supporting pilot projects and further developing grantsmanship skill sets.
“All three Interprofessional Innovation Grant recipients, MGH Institute of Health Professions, Saint Louis University, and Seton Hall University, demonstrate the innovation and creativity of interprofessional education and collaboration,” said ASAHP President Phyllis King, PhD, FASAHP. “Thank you to the University of Cincinnati for their generosity and partnership in awarding this grant.”
Awardees will be invited to present their work at the 2022 ASAHP Annual Conference in Long Beach, California.
The following teams have each been awarded $2,000 for their projects:
MGH INSTITUTE OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS
Health professions faculty perceptions of employing virtual reality technology to create interprofessional simulation-based educational activities guided by principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion: A pilot study.
This pilot research project will explore health professions faculty perceptions around the use of VR technology, stimulating ideation around VR use for culturally relevant interprofessional clinical education opportunities across SLP, PT, OT, Genetic Counseling, Physician Assistant, and Nursing graduate programs.

Advancing Inclusion of Transgender and Gender Diverse Identities in Clinical Education: The Interprofessional Transgender Health Education Day
The ASAHP grant will enable us to train 280 future healthcare providers on the fundamentals of transgender-inclusive healthcare, including 180 medical students, 15 medical family therapy students, 40 speech language pathology students, and 30 dietetic interns.

Interprofessional Active Learning Environment: Integrating Simulation and Telehealth Practices to Promote Psychosocial Wellbeing
The faculty driven SHU project seeks to design and evaluate an interprofessional active learning simulation (ALS) experience using a virtual reality (VR) avatar-based character that possess a blend of artificial and human intelligence to enable health professional students to interact as the “human in the situation” to address the person plan of care via a telehealth practice model.

Using a team science approach we believe this innovative ALS will help bridge interprofessional student coursework and clinical experiences by intentionally offering a robust high leverage structured practice opportunity incorporating the tenets associated with the practice of Telehealth while addressing the persons psychosocial wellbeing.” -Genevieve Pinto Zipp, PT, EdD, FNAP

The College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS) is the University of Cincinnati’s “youngest” college, having been granted college status in March 1998.
