Developing Educators at Cleveland Clinic: A Systems Approach

  • Define characteristics of a systems-based approach to faculty development in a large healthcare system

  • Discuss the OESD approach to interprofessional educator and scholar development at Cleveland Clinic

  • Discuss skills and knowledge needed by all educators.

Colleen Y. Colbert, PhD, is Director of the Office of Educator & Scholar Development at Cleveland Clinic and Professor of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. She has had editorial roles with two international medical education journals and is currently a guest editor with Journal of Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Colbert’s current research interests include learner assessment and the enhancement of survey methodology in health professions education. She mentors numerous faculty and trainees on scholarly projects and provides educational consults at the local, national and international levels. 

Lily Pien, MD, MHPE

Dr. Pien is the Associate Director in the Office of Educator and Scholar Development (OESD). She is a staff allergist in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. She is a professor of medicine in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine-Case Western Reserve University. She graduated from Northwestern University Medical School and received a master’s degree in Health Professions of Education from the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Allison Prelosky-Leeson, MEd is the Program Manager for the Office of Educator & Scholar Development at Cleveland Clinic. She manages the implementation of the Essentials Program for Health Professions Educators and Distinguished Educator Certificate Programs. She also teaches within the Essentials Program and other faculty development venues. Her areas of scholarly activity and teaching include feedback, safe and inclusive learning environments, managing difficult conversations in education, and curriculum design.

Mari Knettle, DPT, EdD, is Medical Director of the Center for Health Professions Education at Cleveland Clinic and Assistant Professor of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. She leads educational programming for students in more than 50 professions at Cleveland Clinic’s Ohio locations including affiliate-based education as well as Cleveland Clinic’s internal education programs and health professions residencies and fellowships.
